The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) has presented the first part of its 6th assessment report.

According to the report, climate change is continuing unrestrained – even faster than feared. Limiting global warming to 1.5 or 2 degrees is now only possible if greenhouse gas emissions are reduced quickly, comprehensively and sustainably.

“It is undeniable that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, oceans and land masses. Widespread and rapid changes have occurred in the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, and biosphere.”

Many of the climatic changes observed to date have not occurred on Earth for hundreds of thousands of years, and some of these changes – such as the progressive rise in sea level – are irreversible for over hundreds to thousands of years.
