Yesterday evening, the third online event from the series KLIMADISKURSE took place. The topic was the transformation of the energy system to a decentralized, democratic and climate-neutral energy supply, which is not only a question of technical infrastructure and material resources. In her dissertation on the innovative power of citizen-owned energy projects, policy analyst Dr. Arwen Colell examined the extent of the power of citizens to help in a system change. Shared values and social ownership are critical to the successful implementation of on-the-ground projects and can reorder power relationships in the local energy economy. We discussed with her and other experts how policymakers can and must remove barriers to the energy transition “from below” and also shape the energy transition “from above” on a large scale.
